Carpark Football: A Way Of Life

Call it recreation, sport, exercise, whatever you want, but the evening car park soccer at ISH has become a way for both members of ISH and hostels beyond to come and express themselves.

It is now an activity in which people look forward to. In a chat with one of the students of the school, he explained that he had his accommodation at Pentagon but would pay a cab every weekend to come and partake in the famous 4 A-Side competition held at the car park.

The car park soccer wasn’t always this highlighted. It just used to be a case of setting stones as goal posts and burning calories, but with gradual interest from onlookers, it has since expanded to 40x40cm goalposts, gym boots, time limits for every match-up, trainers and even cash- yes cash. Competitions are often staged with winners taking as much as GHC100 home on such nights. And to ensure fair officiating, the crowd totally controls the game.

On Saturday nights, it serves as a distraction to all those wanting to stay indoors and be occupied, and also serves as exercise for all those needing to burn some weight.

Matches are riveting with dead ball skills, kamikaze defending and even bloopers; it’s a joy to behold. Students at ISH now look forward to the weekends with so much optimism on entertainment.

Who’d have thought such an independently organised activity could become what could today almost be called a society? With increasing participation from all over campus, this carpark-based phenomenon is sure to continue growing. With teams being picked on ability in the game, there’s sure to be a significant increase in competition meaning more training and more money! Perhaps even more carparks?
